Santa Fe, New Mexico – Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead at their home in Santa Fe on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. The couple’s dog was also found deceased.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the news to local media shortly after midnight. While an active investigation is ongoing, authorities stated there are no signs of foul play at this time.
“We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased at their residence on Sunset Trail,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “This is an active investigation, but there is no indication of foul play.”
The cause of death and the time when the couple may have died have not yet been released. Investigators are currently awaiting a search warrant to proceed with further examination.
Gene Hackman, aged 95, was a towering figure in Hollywood, known for his versatility and commanding on-screen presence. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was 63.
Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Hackman earned numerous accolades, including:

Born in California in 1930, Hackman’s journey to stardom was far from conventional. At 16 years old, he lied about his age to enlist in the U.S. Army, serving for four-and-a-half years.
After his military service, he pursued acting by joining the Pasadena Playhouse in California, where he formed a lifelong friendship with Dustin Hoffman.
Hackman retired from acting after his final film, Welcome to Mooseport (2004), choosing to live a quieter life in New Mexico with his wife.
